Lenze Americas Drives Packaging and Processing Innovation at Pack Expo 2023

Uxbridge, MA, September 8, 2023

Lenze, a leading automation company for the machine-building industry and a specialist in motion centric automation, is exhibiting at PACK EXPO 2023, Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC), Las Vegas, NV, from September 11-13 at Booth #C4803.

Lenze will be exhibiting solutions that drive innovation and promote the benefits of collaborative design, integration, and deployment across myriad industries. Highlighted solutions will include:

1. New GEORGII KOBOLD partnership delivering unique advantages that address of the challenges faced when integrating customizable, servo motors and control platforms.

2. Complex mechanical juggler unit exhibiting Lenze’s most innovative control systems connected to real-time x4 Cloud performance metrics.

3. New interactive wall allowing various packaging challenges to be explored in a dynamic touch screen environment.

4. Large scale product wall presenting complete Lenze product solutions while also highlighting Lenze flexibility to co-exist in multi-manufacturer environments.

5. Innovative and proprietary FAST motion technology modules which vastly simplifies setup, adjustment, and alterations of automation deployments.

Lenze’s Automation Wall illustrates the Lenze hardware and software portfolio, from cloud to the geared motor. Our portfolio, combined with our technology expertise, leads to optimized machine solutions for our customers. Lenze is an all-in-one solution provider offering cloud solutions, control systems, HMIs, safety controls, VFDs and servo drives, and a broad array of servo and AC motors in combination with gearing. Use of open communication protocols secure high connectivity and easy horizontal and/or vertical integration. As motion specialists,

we offer ready-made and proven FAST motion technology modules, like FAST AS/RS, FAST Robotics, and other material handling and logistics relevant software. These offerings reduce the software development efforts of our customers and improve the development time of machines resulting in a shorter time-to-market.

The Lenze Juggler is a fun exhibit showcasing a machine with the ability to juggle without any sensors. It demonstrates ball juggling based on real principles of physics – meaning that both the throw and catch must happen at precise velocity and angle. To ensure that the “hands” are always at the right position at the right time to make the catch, the motion of the (4) servo axes must be precisely coordinated. This is demonstrated with a drive-based motion control topology. Four i950 servo drives are communicating via the onboard EtherCAT motion bus. The application is solved by the Lenze FAST Technology Module (TM) Flex Cam.

In material handling and logistics applications like stacker cranes, load handling devices, palettizing and depalletizing, portal-based sorting, as well as pick-and-place applications, the Lenze i950 is a perfect solution. By using drive-based motion, the cycle time will be extremely fast since the motion will be handled within the i950 servo inverter and between the actuators. The line controller (PLC) can be selected as a smaller version and is only responsible for logic tasks. See how all this can be monitored in real-time with x4 Cloud running on a standard iPad.

The Smart Conveyor demonstrates Lenze’s answer to today’s horizontal conveying challenges – the Lenze Smart Motor – our decentralized drive solution. It is as simple as a direct online motor combined with the advantages of an electronically controlled motor (five speeds, defined start/stop ramps, status feedback to control system). Perfectly designed for the motion profile of horizontal conveying with a 400% starting torque for the acceleration phase. This solution opens the potential for standardization and reduces variations by up to 70% or more.

From control cabinet installations to decentralized ones, the 8400 motec, the i550 cabinet, and the i550 protec (NEMA 4X) drive, offer flexibility to match the unique requirements of different conveying and sorting applications. Offering modularity and scalability; openness and connectivity; compact size; easy installation & parameterization; smartphone app diagnostics & parameterization; and integrated safety options.

The i550 protec with NEMA 4X enclosure requires significantly less space than that of current competitor solutions, creating decentralized installation opportunities where previously there wasn’t enough. Installation costs can also cut by up to 50% by reducing the need for expensive motor cables, smaller control cabinets, and less fuses (group installation). The solution also offers an extension box up to 22 kW with service switch & control elements; wide range of fieldbus interfaces; and IO-Link V1.1 with automatic parameterization when replacing devices.

The i550 protec is the first, decentralized VFD on the market that offers IO-Link. The global market for IO-Link will grow by 27% by 2025, so the importance of this short distance, bi-directional and point-to-point communication will grow enormously in the field level of actuators and sensors.
